The name Versys is a portmanteau of the words versatile and system.
Based on the Ninja650R / ER-6f. Compared to the Ninja650R / ER-6f, the Versys has a more upright riding position, a re-tuned engine with stronger low and mid range power, longer suspension travel and a taller seat height. It also has a redesigned sub-frame, different seat, different handle bars, different suspension components, and a different appearance due to a different windshield and plastics.
The Versys's 650 cc liquid cooled,four-stroke parallel-twin engine has been retuned for more bottom-end and mid-range torque. This is achieved with different camshafts and fuel injection mapping. These changes cause peak torque to occur at a lower engine speed and provide better throttle response in the 3000 to 6000 rpm range. In addition a balance tube has been added between the exhaust headers to smooth out power delivery. Power is 59.4 hp (44 kW) @ 8,400 rpm, compared with the Ninja's 65.7 hp (49 kW) @ 8,400 rpm. Torque is 42 ft•lb (57 N•m), compared with the Ninja's 45.5 ft•lb (61.7 N•m) Improving the engine's low and mid range response comes at the expense of a slight reduction in peak horsepower however. A similar approach was recently deployed by Honda with their CBF1000 model. The engine uses a 180 degree crankshaft. This in turn requires an uneven firing interval (180 degrees, 540 degrees) which gives the engine note a distinctive "throbbing" sound at idle.
The Versys suspension has greater vertical travel and more adjust-ability than the suspension on the ER-6 / Ninja 650. It replaces the non-adjustable forks of the Ninja / ER-6 with an inverted front fork with larger diameter tubes. These are externally adjustable for preload and rebound damping. The right fork leg carries a damping cartridge while both legs contain springs. The rear shock is adjustable for preload and rebound damping. It is connected to a beefier alloy swing arm instead of the tubular steel swing arm used on the ER-6.
AMA racing classes had two classes: 125 cc and 250 cc two-strokes, with no provision for four strokes. Most riders considered four-stroke engine technology to be antiquated and uncompetitive. Additionally,
most four strokes produced very little power (the 1996 Honda XR400 made 32 bhp (24 kW), compared to the 40 bhp (30 kW) produced by most 250 two-strokes of the time).
In 1996, the AMA changed racing rules to allow 450 cc four strokes to compete in the same racing class as 250 cc two-strokes. Yamaha engineer Yoshiharu Nakayama first came up with the idea of creating the first competitive four-stroke race motocross bike. The Yamaha YZ400F was developed to fit into this category. It solved the power dilemma by borrowing superbike technology and giving the YZ a five-valve head, liquid cooling and a 12.5-1 compression ratio.
In 1997, Yamaha rocked the motocross world with the introduction of the YZ400M prototype, a concept motorcycle which borrowed much technology from road racing. The YZM was far ahead of all competition among four-stroke motocross bikes.Doug Henry piloted the YZ400M to its first victory in 1997 at the Las Vegas Supercross. This was the first time any four-stroke had won an AMA event. The YZ400M was the predecessor of the production YZ400F, which was released the next year.
Marchetti, coming from Ferrari F1. It featured more aggressive camshafts, titanium conrods and a shorter stroke and wider bore, which allowed it to rev more safely at high RPMs. It produced 98.5 kW (135 bhp) at 10,200 RPM with a maximum torque of 105 Nm at 8000 RPM. Most of the chassis was the same as the 996 SPS, but using a new Brembo braking system, with thinner discs and 4-pad, 4-pot calipers with 34mm pistons.
Designed by Pierre Terblance, the 749 was available as the 749, 749 Dark, 749S, and 749R. It shared many of its parts with the 999, with the exception of a slightly smaller 180/55 profile rear tire,
smaller cylinders, and different cylinder heads, giving it a smaller displacement of 748 cc. This smaller engine is higher revving and produces a lower peak horsepower than the larger engine used in the 999. The 749S model, like the 999, incorporates features rarely found on production motorcycles, including adjustable rake (23.5° or 24.5°) and five-position adjustable rearset mounts.A limited number of the 749 were manufactured as a race version — the 749R — each with their production number stamped on the triple clamp. This race model was lighter, had a shorter stroke, increased bore and larger valves which allowed it to run more efficiently at higher RPM, and hence, produced more torque and power than the 749/S models. The 749R also came with a larger tank (4.8 US gallons); slipper clutch;Ohlins forks, shock and steering damper; racing cams; titanium valves, valve guides, and connecting rods; magnesium head covers, and carbon fiber belt covers. Its 2004 model had carbon fiber fairings. The 749 was replaced by the Ducati 848 for the 2008 model year.
Braking performance, which used an antilock braking system on the front dual disc brakes, was 60 to 0 mph (97 to 0 km/h) in 124 ft (38 m).
The feature that most impressed the reviewer was the unique automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) technology, called by Honda the "Human Friendly Transmission," which, though expensive, was revolutionary, and potentially, "the ideal drivetrain for most of us, with the potential to satisfy a wide variety of riders regardless of experience or riding preference."
Reviewer complaints focused on ergonomics, especially potentially uncomfortable seating on long rides, and the lack of wind protection at high speed, meaning the rider is fatigued pulling on the handlebars to resist the wind pushing them backwards. There was also no storage space at all, and the price of US$ 14,599 is much higher than any comparably performing machine. Since the initial reviews, the price rose to US$ 15,599. The load capacity was only 324 lb (147 kg), meaning that with a passenger the DN-01 was likely to become overloaded if touring were attempted. Ultimate MotorCycling, like other reviewers, was fascinated with the transmission technology but found the combination of styles and features unsatisfactory from the point of view of either a cruiser rider or sportbike rider, while the lack of storage fails to meet the needs of either touring riders or the urban commuter scooter buyer. THe DN-01 had a catalyser system compliant with EURO-3,California Air Resources Board (CARB) and EPA emissions standards.
The 2000–2001 models are designated SP1, while the 2002–2006 models are designated SP2 (the latter having updated full injection and suspension systems).
1988–2002 In 1988, new rules in superbike racing allowed V-twin engines up to 999 cc to compete. Prior to the rules change,
750 cc four-cylinder motorcycles were the dominant force in production based competition. During the first two years of the World Superbike championship, Honda won the series with their RC30, powered by a 750 cm3 V-4. In 1990, however,Raymond Roche secured Ducati's first world title aboard the Ducati 851. Throughout the next 11 years, Ducati would go on to win 8 World Superbike Championships with their V-twins (Honda won two and Kawasaki just one).
Honda was unable to win consistently, particularly because of rival V-twins' displacement advantage over Honda's V-4. In 2000 Honda released the RC51, powered by a 998 cc liquid-cooled V-twin engine. That year, it won the World Superbike Championship with Colin Edwards riding for the Castrol team. In 2001, Ducati regained the title but the RC51 was still a contender boasting superior reliability with comparable speed and power. The RC51 won again in its final year of factory-supported racing in World Superbike in 2002 and that same year also captured the AMA superbike title with Nicky Hayden. Honda had taken the lessons learned in the SP-1's first season, producing the SP-2 for 2002. A stronger, more rigid frame and swingarm were identical to the WSB race bike parts and engine modifications boosted peak power by 3 kW (4 bhp) and cut weight by 5 kg (11 lb). Factory specifications for road going SP-2s (sourced from Honda) were 133 bhp with a top speed of 170 mph. The factory racing edition RC51 was said to put out 185 bhp or more.
2003–present Honda stopped official support for Superbike racing in 2003 (though some teams have had factory support) and as Superbike rules changed to allow 1000 cc 4-cylinder bikes the RC51 was replaced by the CBR1000RR Fireblade as the Honda superbike racer. In 2004, Honda released the Nicky Hayden special edition, which differed from previous models in that it had a polished aluminum frame and swing arm, a sticker kit, and white number plates on the front upper fairing and tail fairing. 2003 was the first year that Honda made improvements to the SP-2, bringing in a stronger and much lighter swing arm. In 2003, six limited edition models were released to celebrate 2002 WSBK Championship. The six limited editions were markedly similar with the only exception being the yellow on chrome Enkei rims. These are verifable by Vehicle Identification Number.
The RC51 was a racing superbike which benefitted from gearbox sprocket changes for street use (factory RC51s were highly geared for top speed performance).

The Honda CB600F Hornet was introduced for Europe in 1998, although a 250 cc version has existed as a home-market only version since 1994. The bike has a six-speed transmission. Its suspension consists of a front telescopic fork and a rear single shock. Its brakes are dual-disc, twin piston in the front and single-disc, single pot in the rear.
It was given the 16 in (410 mm) diameter front wheel and 17 in (430 mm), 180 section rear wheel setup from the Fireblade.
As a sport-oriented motorcycle that provides an upright riding position, it is considered a standard or "naked-bike".
In 2000, Honda updated the Hornet, changing the 16 in (410 mm) front wheel for a 17 in (430 mm) to help corner stability and increasing the strength of the brake pass-over system on the front, making the brakes stronger. However, Honda did not increase the size of the fuel tank. A faired version, the CB600FS, was also introduced in 2000.
In 2003, Honda gave the CB600F version a make-over, with a larger fuel tank (17 L/3.7 imp gal; 4.5 US gal as opposed to the former 16 L/3.5 imp gal; 4.2 US gal), and 'sharper' styling. The CB600S faired version was discontinued.
In 2006, the instrument cluster was modernised, and more importantly, it was fitted with upside-down front forks, to improve road-holding and cornering stability.
Honda took the Hornet to the United States and Canadian market for the 2004 and 2006 model years. It was called the Honda 599.
The highly revised CB600F model came out in April 2007. The engine of the new motorcycle is a detuned version of the engine available in the 2007 CBR600RR giving a maximum output power of approximately 102 bhp (76 kW).
